Description:

Typescript of Insight, Chapter 10. In same black carbon as A361, except for a few pages in blue. Pages numbered in type at bottom, 13-73, in type at top, 2-61--first page not numbered in type at top--and by hand at top, 465-524. (Chapter 9 was numbered in type, 1-12. Thus probably at one time chapters 9 and 10 were conceived as one chapter.   Further evidence of this appears in these pages, including the fact that `Chapter X' is written by hand on the first page.)  Numbering here will follow the handwritten numbers at the top of the pages.

pt 279, line -12 (ts 465): `What weight must evidence have, if ...' is in ts, `What does evidence have to weigh, if ...' This is not changed in ts.

pt 280, line -6 (ts 466): `chapter' was in ts `section'. Change to 'chapter' is made by hand. This supports hypothesis that chapters 9 and 10 were originally conceived as one.

pt 281, line 22 (ts 468): ts has handwritten 'the' before `cognitional process' (not changed and not in book.)

pt 281, line -7 (ts 469): ts had `strained' for `restrained'. This is changed by hand.

pt 282, line -20 (ts 470): ts had `our man' for `the weary worker'.  This is changed by hand.

pt 283, line -10 (ts 472):  'Since there was ...' is in ts, 'Since any fire there might have been, was extinguished, that ...' The words 'there might have been,' are crossed out in hand, but no other changes are made.

pt 284, line -18 (ts 473): `the' (last word in line in pt) does not appear in ts.

pt 286, line 7 (ts 476): ts had `commerce and industry', but `and' is changed to `or' by hand

pt 286, line 8 (ts 476): Sentence `But unless ...' in ts starts: `But unless he learns to be more wary from mistakes and minor ineptitudes ...'

pt 286, line -15 (ts 477): `executed' was `tested' in ts, but is changed by hand to `executed'.

pt 286, line -12 (ts 477): The word 'So' was not originally in ts, but is added by hand.

pt 287, line 8 (ts 477): `a habitual' - in ts there is a pencilled `n' after `a'.

pt 288, line 12 (ts 479): the first `ideal' was not in ts, but is put in by hand. The next sentence reads, 'For there to be a second thing or a second ideal frequency ...' This is not changed in ts.

pt 289 (ts 481): Section 5 was called simply `Common Sense'. This is not changed in ts. That this section may have been written before the chapters on common sense is indicated by the fact that the words `Though some repetition will be involved,' are added by hand in the ts.

pt 289 (ts 481): `5.1 The Source of Common-Sense Judgments' is added by hand.

pt 289, line -16 (ts 481): `lies' is in ts `lie'. This is not changed in ts.

pt 289, line -5 (ts 482): The words, `If I may repeat myself,' are added by hand in ts. Is this another indication that this was written before the chapters on common sense?

pt 290, line 2 (ts 482): `obstruct' was in ts `prevent'. Change made by hand in ts.

pt 290, line -22 (ts 483): `presuppose and improve' is in ts `presupposes and improves'. No change is made in ts.

pt 291 (ts 484): The subheading `5.2 The object of Common-Sense Judgments' is added by hand in ts. So is the subheading `5.3 Common-Sense Judgment and Empirical Science' on p. 293 (ts 488).

pt 294, line 16 (ts 488): `earlier chapters' was originally in ts, `the sections on Image and Truth and on Descriptin and Explanation'. Change made by hand in ts. Further evidence that the chapters on common sense had not yet been written.

pt 294, line 19 (ts 489): `explanatory conjugates' originally read `immediate conjugates'. Change in ts by hand.

pt 294, line 23 (ts 489): `experiential conjugates' was originally in ts `mediated conjugates'. Change made by hand in ts.

pt 294, line -14 (ts 489): `... empirical residue.' originally in ts read: `... empirical residue of the individual, incidental, and non-systematically divergent, the unassignability of the continuum.' Crossed out by hand in ts, after first having made some changes--writing `the' before incidental, again before non-systematically, `and' before the unassignability' and changing the latter to `non-countable multiplicity'. All of this is crossed out.

pt 295, line 2 (ts 490): `between the propositions' was `between propositions'.  `the' is added by hand.

pt 295, line -15 (ts 490): `operate' originally was `operate it'. Change made by hand in ts.

pt 296, line 11 (ts 491): `equally' was `as well'. Change made by hand in ts.

pt 296, line - 13 (ts 492): Paragraph, `Inversely', was run into previous.  Marginal note indicates a new paragraph should begin here.

pt 296, line -2 (ts 493): Paragraph, `On the other hand' was run into previous.  Marginal note indicates a new paragraph should begin here.

pt 298, line 7 (ts 494): Paragraph, `But if', was run into previous.  Marginal note indicates a new paragraph should begin here.

pt 299, line 18 (ts 496): `sections' was `sub-sections'. Changed by hand in ts.

pt 299, line -11 (ts 497): Sentence `This probability ...' was in ts: `This probability of judgment differs from the probability investigated in the statistical phase.' Changes made by hand in ts.

pt 301, line 7 (ts 499): `do not' was `don't'.  Changed by hand in ts.

pt 301, line -21 (ts 500): `section' was in ts `sub-section'. Change introduced by hand in ts.

pt 301, line -3 (ts 500): `Automatically' (still in published text) is crossed out in ts, and replaced by `Further,'.

pt 302, line 2 (ts 500): There is the word, `Automatically,' in ts before `Further questions arise'. It is not crossed; out in ts, yet does not appear in pt.  Also, there is an indication that BL or a reader wanted the sentence, `Not only do they arise ...' to read, `Nor do they arise only from the concrete problems set by tension and gravitation'. This was originally followed by ', which in turn give rise to further questions'. But this latter clause is crossed out in ts. And in line 5, the word, procedures, is followed in ts by 'which gives relevance to enormous ranges of further questions'. The latter clause is crossed out in ts.

pt 302, line -1 (ts 502): the word, `non-scientific', is added by hand in ts.

pt 303, line 7 (ts 502): the words, `one may', are added by hand in ts.

pt 303, line 20 (ts 503): the word, `limit' is followed in ts by `, so that, at the very time radical proposals for revision become again possible, the open minds of scientists are becoming closed.  As Max Planck put it: "A new scientific truth does not triumph by convincing its opponents and making them see the light, but rather because its opponents eventually die, and a new generation grows up that is familiar with it." Scientific Autobiography and Other Papers, New York 1949.'  This is all crossed out in ts.

pt 303, line -7 (ts 504): `canon of selection' was in ts `principle of exclusion'. Change by hand in ts.

pt 304, lines 7-8 (ts 504): `a unique' was in ts `an unique'. Change by hand in ts.

pt 304, line 15 (ts 504): `elements or categories' was in ts `terminal categories'. Change by hand in ts.

pt 304, line -11 (ts 505): `increasingly is' was in ts `is increasingly'.  Changed by hand in ts.

pt 304, line -9 (sec. 7) to 305, line 18, (`provides the conditioned.'): this material occurs in ts on reverse side of a piece of Gregorian University stationery (ts 506).

pt 304, line -3 (ts 506): `... to acts,' was in ts `to acts of meaning,'.  No change in ts.

pt 305, line -16 (ts 507): `converse' was in ts `opposite'. Change by hand in ts.

pt 305, line -14 (ts 507): `resting' was in ts `that rest'. Change by hand in ts.

pt 305, line -12 (ts 507): `Now' was in ts `Fourthly'.  No change in ts.

pt 306, line 5 (ts 507): `the same' was in ts `its'.  Change by hand in ts.

pt 306, line -14 (ts 508): the word `and' is added by hand in ts, where previously there was just a comma.

pt 307, line 4 (ts 509): `serially' (second edition only) was in ts and in 1st edition `serial'. No change in ts. But also no mention of this change in preface to second edition.

pt 308, line 3 (ts 510): `each' was in ts `the'. Change by hand in ts.

pt 308, line -6 (ts 512): `are' is introduced by hand in ts (this seems to correct a simple typographical error).

pt 310, line -3 (ts 515): after `reference' there is written in and then crossed out, `or isomorphism'.

pt 310, line -2 (ts 515): the words `or isomorphism' were added by hand. The same re: 310, -1.

pt 311, line 4 (ts 515): Ts read, 'Secondly, then, ...' The word, `then', is crossed out by hand.

pt 311, line 9 (ts 516): from the word `others' to the end of this section 8, the carbon switches to the blue, which seems to be a later version. This would indicate that there was an earlier version of this material on mathematical judgments, which was rewritten.

pt 311, line -5 (ts 516): The sentence, `By the mathematician, ...' was in ts, `From the viewpoint of the mathematician, this conjunction commonly is viewed as dynamic.' Changes by hand in ts.

pt 315, sec. 9 (ts 523):  With this section, and to the end of chapter (534) we are back to the black carbon used before the last section.

pt 316 (ts 524): The last paragraph of the chapter was in ts, `Serial analytic principles are analytic propositions whose terms pertain to series, some of which, in some fashion, formally or virtually, accurately or approximately, generally or in some particular cases, are existential'.  This was changed in ts to what now appears in the text.
