Description:
This is a lecture Lonergan delivered at the 1978 York University Conference on Hermeneutics and Structuralism. The text of the lecture can be found at 29340DTE070. Lonergan draws on others throughout this lecture. Since Lévi-Strauss brings together modern cultural anthropology and structural linguistics, Lonergan begins with some statements about modern cultural anthropology, and follows this with a section on structural linguistics. A third section addresses (1) structuralist anthropology, the transfer from structural linguistics to anthropology, (2) insights from the transfer, involving a review of Lévi-Strauss’s major works, and (3) concepts of human science in relation to structure. This video ends before this third section is complete. Editing and restoration by Greg Lauzon.
